THE Flying Fijians captain Tevita Ikanivere wants Fiji to improve its execution after their 45-29 win over Canada in the Pacific Nations Cup semi-final in Osaka last Saturday.
Ikanivere was pleased with Fiji’s start but said a number of mistakes allowed Canada back into the match.
“I think we started pretty well. I think we almost let Canada back in the game with a few silly mistakes,” Ikanivere said.
He said Fiji created promising opportunities out wide but failed to finish them on several occasions.
“I think about two or three times the pass never stuck, and we can’t afford to do that against good teams,” he said.
Ikanivere said Fiji needed to address those mistakes before facing Japan in the final.
“I think we were lucky today, Canada didn’t punish us as much, but we need to be better at that to finish our chances we get and get more points,” he said.
Meanwhile, head coach Senirusi Seruvakula praised the impact of Fiji’s new players, saying their performances would make selection for the November Nations Cup more difficult.
“The boys that are new to the team, they really put their hands up today and I’m very proud of them, the way they played today,” Seruvakula said.
Fiji will face Japan in the Pacific Nations Cup final this Saturday at 7.05pm.
