Three sisters were commissioned to weave a mat which featured the Fiji flag as part of the 50th independence celebrations.
Sisters Takayawa Veitacini, Ledua Korosaya, Salanieta Tubuna — and their cousin Ilisapeci Daini took a week to complete the vakabati which featured 50 layers of kula with the Fijian flag neatly knitted into it.
The Kabara, Lau siblings, all in their 20s, have been weaving mats for all types of occasions for some years now.
But their traditional skills were put to test when they were asked to weave the mat for a Fijian living abroad.
Their mother, Joana Senikuta, said it was an amazing accomplishment and “a proud moment” for her family.
“It took them one week to complete the ‘Fiji Day’ mat as it was an overseas order and we are all proud of what they have achieved,” Ms Senikuta said.
“It could not have come at a much better time, especially when Fiji is celebrating such a historic event.
“This has motivated them to do more mat weaving and they will continue to look at ways to improve their creativity.”
Ms Senikuta said the ‘Fiji Day’ mat was sold for $1300.
