MARITIME professionals from Pacific Island States gathered in Nadi for a week-long regional training course aimed at strengthening their ability to audit and implement international maritime standards.
The Regional Training Course for auditors under the IMO Member State Audit Scheme (IMSAS) officially opened in Nadi, Fiji, through the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Technical Co-operation Program.
The course was officially opened by Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) Executive Chairman Savenaca Cavalevu, who welcomed participants and highlighted the importance of turning international maritime standards into effective national practice.
Mr Cavalevu reinforced the IMO theme, “Policy to Practice”, stressing that adopting international maritime standards was only the first step.
He said the focus must also be on their effective implementation, enforcement and continuous improvement at the national level.
The training is designed to strengthen participants’ understanding of IMSAS and the responsibilities of IMO Member States in giving full and complete effect to applicable IMO instruments.
For Pacific Island States, MSAF said effective implementation was particularly important in translating international maritime obligations into strong national legislation, capable institutions and effective oversight systems.
“Policy to Practice” also reflects the need for maritime administrations to ensure that international commitments are applied effectively within national systems.
MSAF welcomed participants from neighbouring Pacific Island States and described the course as an important opportunity to strengthen regional cooperation and share experiences and best practices among maritime administrations.
Throughout the week, participants will further develop their knowledge and auditing capabilities while strengthening the collective capacity of Pacific maritime administrations to meet their international obligations.
