LAUTOKA and Levuka ports were “suspended until further notice” yesterday because of adverse weather.
The suspension was announced by Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd as Category 3 Severe Tropical Cyclone Vaianu intensified and made its way southeastwards past the Fiji Group.
In an advisory, the FPCL said normal operations continued at Suva’s international and local wharves; however, no pilotage services were provided from 6pm on April 7 until 8am today.
“Vessels currently alongside will be closely monitored,” the corporation said.
“Instructions will be issued if anchoring out is required for safety.”
As part of safety measures, stakeholders were urged to secure moored vessels with additional lines and fenders, consider suspending cargo operations, and secure cranes, containers, and loose equipment.
They were also advised to evacuate non-essential personnel from exposed areas if conditions deteriorated, and to ensure emergency power and communication systems remained fully operational.
All vessel owners, masters, and agents were reminded to acknowledge receipt of the notice, report their current position and status to Suva VTS and Port Control for Lautoka and Levuka, and to comply immediately with any directives issued by the FPCL Harbour Master Unit.
