OPPOSITION MP Rinesh Sharma is urging young people to contest the 2026 General Election, saying Fiji needs fresh ideas and new energy.
“I would like to see more youths involved in politics. While there is a process to follow to get involved, I encourage youths to take up the challenge,” he said”
Mr Sharma said in an interview that politics was open to all.
“Anyone has the right to join a party, get selected and be elected,” he said.
However, he cautioned that life as a politician comes with serious pressure, risks and personal sacrifice.
“We’ve had cases of Members of Parliament receiving threats, and that’s why I’m asking the youths to first consider whether they are ready for it.
“You need to be able to maintain good mental health and work for the betterment of the country, regardless of the challenges that come your way.”
Mr Sharma also questioned why more young people weren’t stepping forward.
“We should ask ourselves why we don’t have enough youths getting involved.”
While the role may appear glamorous from the outside, Mr Sharma said the long hours, stress and time away from family were the realities of the job.
