The Fiji Rugby Union is taking a holistic approach into its sevens program looking towards the next two Olympic Games and the upcoming HSBC World SVNS Series.

Acting chief executive office Koli Sewabu said they have completed the first part of review last week for both the men and women’s program.

The second part of the review will be conducted next week with emphasis on the changes happening to the world series from next season.

“We are waiting on our general manager high performance (Nacanieli Cawanibuka) to come on board next week and then we are going to go through a couple more runs of reviews.

“We are to look at the whole program understanding that there are some changes happening next year when it comes to the World 7s Series. We need to understand the new format and then put some plans in place on how we are going to tackle that,” he said.

The review will also include the plans around the next two Olympic Games in 2028 and most importantly the 2032 event in Brisbane, Australia.

“We are not just looking to the next Olympics; we are basically looking at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics as well. As part of the process there are a number of things that we will start to build over the next couple of months that may include calling for a symposium to get all our stakeholders on board which will form the basis of our long-term strategic plan as we build towards having a culture of excellence within our organisation.

“It is also about getting the best coaches, players, putting them on contracts and ensure that they are well prepared for the next Olympics and the tournaments coming up,” Sewabu added.

After six hectic sevens stops this season, the Fiji Airways Fiji men’s 7s team finished at second place with 96 points while the Fijiana 7s side was at 7th with 46 points.
