THOMAS Setitaia, a member of the SportsWorld Fiji under-20 team, is feeling confident in the team as they prepare to take on their Pacific brothers Tonga in the upcoming Oceania Under-20 Rugby Championship.
The 20-year-old from Tovu, Totoya in Lau, with maternal links to Ireland and currently residing in New Zealand, is thrilled to have achieved a major goal for 2025 by earning a spot in the Fiji U20 squad.
Earlier this year, Setitaia also had the opportunity to play for Moana Pasifika in the Super Rugby U20 competition. Now, he is focused on his role as a flanker for the national side as they gear up for the Oceania Rugby Championship.
“This was one of my goals at the start of the year. Going down to Taupo and playing against the Fiji U20 boys, it was good to be invited to come back and now be part of the national squad,” said Setitaia.
Despite facing differences in playing with the Fiji U20 boys compared to Moana Pasifika, Setitaia is adapting well and embracing the energy and flair that comes with representing his country.
“Playing in Oceania main aim to focus on nailing my role as a flanker, and then I know the boys that i will be playing alongside will be doing their job, so the main job is for me to just do mine.
Reflecting on his journey to the national squad, Setitaia expresses gratitude for the opportunity to wear the white jersey for the first time.
He credits the hard work and dedication he has put in and acknowledges the support and pride of his parents in his achievement.
“Playing with Moana you know Pacific brothers its very similar, so hasn’t been too different, but obviously the Fijians have a bit more flair, bit more energy and its good.
With confidence in the team’s preparation and the selection of the best 28 players, Setitaia is optimistic about their performance in the upcoming matches.
Fiji U20 will take on Tonga in their first match on Wednesday 4pm at King Charles Park in Nadi.
