THE late former president Ratu Epeli Nailatikau has been remembered as a leader who successfully balanced tradition and modern leadership.
Turaga Roko Tui Bau Ratu Timoci Tavanavanua shared this yesterday, saying this was a quality rare among chiefs.
Speaking at Albert Park in Suva yesterday, Ratu Timoci said the late statesman’s approach to leadership was rooted in service rather than authority.
“He understood leadership not as power but as service,” he said.
He added Ratu Epeli carried himself with humility, always mindful that leadership was about others rather than self.
Ratu Timoci said as a chief, Ratu Epeli upheld the values and customs of the vanua, ensuring they remained respected and relevant.
“But he had the rare ability to balance tradition and modernity.”
He noted that those who worked closely with the late leader often spoke of his calm and measured approach, particularly during times of uncertainty.
“In times of uncertainty, he did not react with haste or emotion. Instead, he listened, reflected, and then acted with clarity and purpose.”
Ratu Timoci also shared a personal reflection, recalling Ratu Epeli’s desire to remain connected to his people.
“Sometimes I just want to be Ratu Epeli and walk among my people,” he said.
The church service at Albert Park in Suva was attended by regional and national leaders, including King Tupou VI and Nanasipau’u Tuku’aho, President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, diplomats, and the public.
