Fijian 7s maestro Waisale Serevi has embarked on a mission to transform the lives of Fijian youth through his Aqua Pacific Serevi Academy of Rugby.
Speaking at Lawaqa Park yesterday during his rugby camp, Serevi mentioned the importance of using rugby as a tool to inspire children and young people to set meaningful goals, stay away from drugs, and make positive choices.
“For me, rugby is more than a sport; it’s a vehicle for change,” Serevi shared.
“With the issues our youth face today, drugs and other challenges I wanted to do something rather than nothing. This camp is my way of guiding them towards the right path.”
Reflecting on his own journey, Serevi shared how his dream of becoming a rugby player began at the age of nine.
“In 1977, I was washing my school uniform when I heard people cheering because Fiji had beaten the British Lions. That day, I set my big goal, to play for Fiji. Ten years later, I represented my country.”
Serevi stressed the importance of small, daily goals as stepping stones to achieving bigger dreams.
“Wake up early, clean your bed, go to school on time, and train hard. These small goals build discipline, patience, and perseverance. They are what helped me survive 21 years of international rugby and seven World Cups.”
While teaching rugby skills is a core part of his academy, Serevi’s primary aim is to develop well-rounded individuals.
“My philosophy is to create the best rugby players in the world, but more importantly, good people. Medals and accolades fade, but being a good person lasts forever.”
He also highlighted the role of faith in his journey. “Philippians 4:13 has been my strength: ‘I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.’ That’s the foundation I want to share with the kids.”
The academy’s theme, “Stay Strong, Say No to Drugs,” resonates deeply with Serevi.
He believes that true strength lies in making positive choices and resisting negative influences.
