Seismic activity: Two earthquakes recorded in less than 12 hours

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded Northwest from Lautoka earlier tonight.

The Seismology Unit of the Mineral Resources Department said the seismic activity was recorded at 9.36pm.

It was reported 442km Northwest from Lautoka, 520km Southwest from Rotuma and 563km Northwest of Suva.

The Seismology Unit said it was a moderate earthquake with a shallow depth of 5km.

That was the second earthquake recorded in the Fiji region in less than 12 hours – the first activity recorded at 2.58am, measuring 5.3 magnitudes on the Richter Scale.

It occurred at a shallow depth of 5km, and was located 219km Northeast from Cikobia Island in Lau, 545km North-northeast from Suva, and 89km West-northwest from Wallis and Futuna.
