Seismic Activity | Two earthquakes recorded in Fiji waters

Two earthquakes were recorded in Fiji waters yesterday – one measuring 5.5 magnitude on the Richter scale and the other a 6.7 magnitude.

The 5.5 magnitude quake was recorded at 5.46pm – located 205km West from Lautoka; 221km Northwest from Sigatoka; and 314km North-northwest from Suva.

The Seismology Unit of the Mineral Resources department stated the seismic activity occurred at a shallow depth of 10km, and did not pose any tsunami threat to the region.

The 6.7 magnitude seismic activity was recorded at 11.10pm in Lau waters.

The strong earthquake was recorded 20km South-southeast from Lomaloma, Vanua Balavu (Lau); 85km North-northwest from Tubou, Lakeba; and 286km Northeast from Suva.

According to the unit, it was a strong earthquake with a deep depth source location of 549km, and it did not pose any immediate tsunami threat to the region.
