CONSTRUCTION of nature-based seawalls for three villages on Mali Island will begin once shipping arrangements are confirmed.
Acting Commissioner Northern Apolosi Lewaqai said the Ministry of Waterways had already secured materials needed for the project.
“Materials for the construction of the nature-based seawalls have already been procured through the ministry’s internal funding allocation,” he said.
Mr Lewaqai said the project was awaiting confirmation of shipping schedules and the availability of a barge to transport the materials to the island communities.
“The project is currently awaiting confirmation of shipping schedules and the availability of barge transportation to facilitate the delivery of materials to the island communities.”
He said work would begin once transport arrangements had been finalised.
“Once transportation logistics have been finalised, construction activities will commence,” he said.
He said the project formed part of the ministry’s commitment to protecting vulnerable coastal communities from climate change and natural hazards.
“This initiative forms part of the ministry’s broader commitment to strengthening the resilience of vulnerable coastal communities against the adverse effects of climate change and natural hazards.”
