A desperate multi-agency search is underway for nine missing people feared lost at sea near Kadavu, with the Republic of Fiji Navy (RFN) deploying every available resource in the ongoing operation.
Search efforts continue for the nine personnel reported missing at sea after they failed to return from waters around Kadavu over the past few days.
The search is being coordinated by the Rescue Coordination Centre Fiji, working alongside the Navy and the Fiji Police Force, supported by regional and local partners.
“The Fiji Navy, through RCC Fiji, will continue to work closely with the Fiji Police Force and all supporting partners as search efforts continue, ” Republic of Fiji Navy said in a statement.
Yesterday, RFNS Timo departed for the designated search area to strengthen ongoing maritime search efforts, while aerial support has been provided by the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
Over the past few days, search efforts have been supported by local communities, hotel operators, including Kokomo Island, and local air service providers who have assisted authorities in covering areas of interest.
The last known position of the missing group is believed to be in the area around Solo Lighthouse, north of Kadavu.
“The general public is requested to assist authorities by immediately reporting any sightings, information, floating debris, or unusual activity at sea that may be linked to the missing personnel,”
“Villagers and coastal communities in Kadavu Beqa, Coral Coast and surrounding areas are also requested to remain vigilant and to report any information through their turaga ni koro, the nearest police station, or local authorities.”
