ALL schools across Fiji have been directed to complete their curriculum coverage by the end of Term 2 under a directive issued by the Ministry of Education, raising questions over whether students will physically attend school during Term 3.
The circular issued by permanent secretary for Education Navin Raj on April 28 states that “all curriculum coverage is to be completed by the end of Term 2” as part of fuel conservation measures and efforts to ensure continuity of teaching and learning.
Term 2 is scheduled to run from May 18 to August 21, while Term 3 is due to commence on September 7 and end on December 4. The instruction has raised questions over the purpose of Term 3, including whether students will physically attend classes during that period or whether alternative learning arrangements may be introduced. The circular states that the measures are intended to ensure the continuity of quality teaching and learning while supporting national fuel conservation efforts.
Heads of schools were also directed to update information relating to students’ home circumstances, including residential addresses and access to online learning from home.
The Fiji Times sought clarification from Education Minister Aseri Radrodro on whether there will be a Term 3, whether students will physically attend school during that term, what the “Student Home-Life” requirement means, and whether external examinations will proceed.
Minister Radrodro referred the questions to permanent secretary Mr Raj.
However, Mr Raj had not responded when this edition went to press.
