Jasper Williams Primary School made their debut in the Lautoka Primary Schools Rugby Festival yesterday.
Thirteen-year-old Mereani Botitu shared that the team was excited and overwhelmed when they received the news about participating in the two-day festival.
“We always part of the GIR program but we never participated in competition but this year we were very happy to hear the news that we will participate in these two days festival.
“All the girls prepared well, and we were looking forward to this day and we were praying to God to give us a good weather,” Botitu said.
When asked about their focus in rugby, Botitu mentioned that their primary goal is to develop their rugby talents and secure overseas contracts.
“Our focus is to be good rugby players, wear the Fiji jersey and go and play overseas,” she concluded with her teammates.
The festival marks an important milestone for Jasper Williams Primary School, as it provides the girls with a platform to showcase their skills and passion for the sport.
The school’s participation in the festival is a testament to their dedication and hard work, as well as a sign of growing opportunities for young female athletes in Fiji.
LPSRA president Rusiate Cinavilakeba mentioned the importance of such events in promoting rugby at the grassroots level.
“It’s encouraging to see schools like Jasper Williams Primary participating in the festival. This event is not just about competition, but about development, instilling values, and providing opportunities for young talents to grow,” Cinavilakeba said.
