THE Suva City Council and police are investigating the death of Suva City Council worker Ritnesh Chand to determine how he died while on duty.
Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa confirmed the investigation after visiting Mr Chand’s family alongside Permanent Secretary for Local Government Seema Sharma and Suva City Council Chief Executive Officer Tevita Boseiwaqa.
It was earlier alleged that Chand had been attacked by a group of dogs while carrying out his duties. However, it is understood that may not be the case, and investigations are continuing.
Mr Nalumisa said the family was visited to offer condolences and reassured them of the Government’s support.
“Losing a member of our civic family is never easy,” he said.
“Out of respect for the ongoing law enforcement investigation, we cannot provide any further information regarding the death of the SCC worker at this time.
“We will share the outcome of the investigation in due course. I have also given directives for an internal investigation to be done.”
Mr Nalumisa also acknowledged the support provided to Chand’s family by a corporate organisation, saying the contributions had provided “vital comfort” during a difficult time.
He said the dedication of municipal workers remained the backbone of municipalities and extended his condolences to Chand’s family.
