YOUNG sailors from Savusavu are seeking support to travel to Suva for the national championships, with the opportunity carrying significance beyond the competition itself.

For these athletes, sailing has become a pathway to discipline, confidence and purpose, while keeping them involved in a positive activity and away from the streets.

The sport has also opened opportunities for young sailors to travel overseas, experience different cultures and represent Fiji internationally.

Savusavu has established itself as an important centre for sailing in Fiji, with the town producing several sailors who have gone on to represent the country on the international stage.

That record has given the youths of Savusavu something to aspire to while strengthening the community’s connection with the sport.

For the young sailors, every training session and competition provides an opportunity to develop skills that extend beyond the water.

Sailing demands commitment, discipline, teamwork and confidence, qualities that can help shape young people as they grow.

Their involvement has also become a source of pride for the Savusavu community, with their achievements providing inspiration for younger athletes who may want to follow the same pathway.

However, competing at national level comes with challenges for athletes based outside Suva.

Travel and participation costs can create an added hurdle for young sailors from the North, making support important if they are to take part in major competitions.

The upcoming national championships in Suva would give the Savusavu sailors the opportunity to compete against some of the country’s best and gain valuable experience at a higher level.

It would also allow them to showcase the talent that continues to emerge from the town and strengthen their pathway towards future opportunities.

For Savusavu’s young sailors, reaching the nationals is therefore about more than winning races.

It is about giving them the chance to build confidence, gain experience and continue pursuing a sport that has already given them hope, purpose and a sense of belonging.

With Fiji surrounded by the ocean, the sailors believe the country has the natural environment to develop more athletes capable of competing on the international stage.

For this group from Savusavu, the immediate goal is to get to Suva, compete and make the most of an opportunity that could help shape their future in sailing.
