Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru has reminded Fiji’s deaf rugby players to trust in their strength, preparation and faith as they prepare for the 2025 Pacific Rim Deaf Rugby Sevens Tournament in Australia.

Saukuru delivered his message during the official i-tatau ceremony yesterday, where the men’s and women’s teams were traditionally farewelled ahead of their historic campaign.

“You will be participating in the first-ever Pacific Rim Deaf Rugby Sevens Tournament in Gold Coast, Australia, making history for the region,” Saukuru said.

“I commend your coaches, officials, and medical staff. Your efforts and support have enabled the athletes to qualify for this tournament. I also acknowledge the sacrifices of your families and benefactors.”

A total of 27 players, 13 women and 14 men will represent the country at the tournament, which will run from June 28-29.

They will compete against teams from Australia, Japan, Samoa, Argentina and the Barbarians.

Saukuru reminded the players of the motto of the Fiji Deaf Association: ‘Deaf Can Do’, encouraging them to embrace the challenge with pride.
