Saru out to defend title

VODAFONE Cup defending champion Saru Dragons and former champion Sabeto Roosters have secured their spots in the semi-final after claiming top two spots on the points’ table standings.

The two Western rugby league giants will have to wait for the two best teams to battle in tomorrow’s FNRL Top 8 play-offs between Kinoya Sea Eagles, Makoi Bulldogs, Burenitu Cowboys and Nadera Panthers.

Dragons coach Tevita Volavola said defending the title would be tough after the departure of some of his top players through overseas contracts.

But he was optimistic his new set of boys would rise to occasion and deliver the goods.

“Firstly we are happy to secure a semi-final spot but the biggest challenge now is to defend our title,” said Volavola.

“All teams playing in the play-offs and the semi-final are gunning for the title therefore we need to stand firm and protect the trophy.

“Some members of last year’s winning teams have secured rugby contracts overseas but we don’t see this as an excuse.

“I have faith in all the boys being selected to defend the title in the semi-final.”

Meanwhile, the Dragons will be represented by three of their teams in tomorrow’s play-offs to be held in Suva. The under 16 will face Sabeto, U18 to battle against Burenitu and the reserve grade to face Nadera Panthers.
