President of the Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, Dhirendra Nand has expressed profound sorrow and urged swift action following the desecration of the historic Samabula Shiv Mandir.
In a statement he said the damage caused is not only physical but deeply spiritual and emotional for the Sanatan community.
“The desecration of a sacred object like the century-old murti of Lord Shiva represents a painful blow to the hearts of thousands of devotees across the country,” he said.
“The Sabha is urging the authorities to prioritize the court hearing and sentencing of the suspect, in accordance with the law, to reflect the grave spiritual and cultural impact of this offence on the Hindu community.”
Fiji Police have said the suspect has been referred for a psychiatric evaluation and is expected to appear in court soon.
Mr Nand also called for increased police presence and regular patrols at all major temples, mosques, and other religious institutions across Fiji.
“This measure aims to safeguard sacred spaces and ensure the safety of worshippers, preventing similar acts of violence in the future.”
He has also appealed to leaders from all communities and faiths to unequivocally condemn such acts.
“Collective condemnation and a united front are vital in preserving the social fabric of our beloved Fiji,” he said, encouraging solidarity to reinforce shared values of respect and tolerance.
