THE Salad Bowl team from Sigatoka in Nadroga scooped the netball title of the Hideaway Resort Burenitu Youth netball tournament beating Burenitu Serua Young Netters in the final on Friday.
The netball tournament was in correspondence with the rugby sevens tournament also sponsored by Hideaway Resort with teams from other provinces and the traditional ties of the Burenitu clan in the country were part of the event with an aim of developing the sport of netball in the province of Ra.
The two finalists displayed a do or die final with Burenitu Serua leading Salad Bowl 6-5 and in the second quarter both teams were tied 9-9.
The Sigatoka-based team gained momentum in the third quarter edging Serua 15-13 before they clinched the title in the final quarter with a point difference 18-17.
Salad Bowl team president Judy Kumar was impressed with the competition level of the Rakiraki netball players giving the two travelling teams a good run for their money.
“There were 16 teams and it was nice to see lot of talents in Ra and next year the Nalawa Netball Association will start competition in March and looking at competition there is lot of hidden talents in Ra, Tavua, Vatukoula and Nanukuloa,” said Kumar.
Meanwhile five Salad Bowl players have been selected to be part of the Fiji under-18 trials next month in Suva.
In the first semi-final Salad Bowl defeated Nalaba netters 18-15 and in the second semi-final Burenitu Serua edged Namaya Two 15-14.
The team from Nadroga walks away with $400 and the runner-up from Serua receives $200 with the semi-finalists receiving $50 each.
