Ryan Fox has saved his worst for last when falling out of winning contention at the Mallorca Open during the final round.
The Kiwi golfer held a share of the lead going into the final 18 holes of the DP World Tour event at the Son Muntaner Golf Club in Palma, Spain on Monday morning (NZ time).
After being so accurate in the first three rounds of the week, with only one bogey for the tournament, Fox found the going much tougher during his final round implosion that saw him drop shots with five bogeys and a double as he carded a three over 74.
Fox eventually finished in a two-way tie for fourth with Englishman Dale Whitnell at 13 under.
But he did his best to salvage the round on the back nine with three birdies and just a pair of bogeys.
Fox’s final round of 74 was the worst of those who finished in the top 10 but on a tough day, his plight wasn’t the most heartbreaking.
That belonged to England’s Marcus Armitage who held a two-shot lead with three holes to play but dropped four shots to finish back in a three-way tie for sixth.
German Yannick Paul, who shared the overnight lead with Fox, shot a final round of one over 72 – after his third round 62 – to win his maiden tournament on the DP World Tour at 15 under.
Fox, who has enjoyed a stellar year, will have one more shot at bringing up a third DP World Tour victory in Dubai, the final DP event of the season.
