“He has worked hard to earn his spot”. Lautoka Maroons head coach Peniona Ranitu had this to say about FIJI Water Flying Fijians flanker Lekima Tagitagivalu.
Ranitu played a role in grooming the giant forward earlier in his school days at Tilak High School, where Tagitagivalu represented the school in the under-16 to under-19 rugby competitions.
“I am not surprised at how much he has achieved,” said Ranitu.
“Lekima was very disciplined and humble. We are very proud of him and wish him all the best against Portugal.”
Tagitagivalu, who plies his trade in the French Top 14 side Pau, started all the three Rugby World Cup matches so far and also scored a try in our 26-32 loss to Wales.
“When he played in the U19 division, we drafted him into the Lautoka team that played in the promotion/relegation that year and from there he went on to represent the Fiji U20 team before securing a contract with Pau.”
Ranitu said this was a special year for the Flying Fijians and he was confident they would create more history at this World Cup.
“He has certainly impressed Simon Raiwalui with his work rate and that is why he is included as a starter as his tackling and attack game has improved a lot.”
Tagitagivalu is also the younger brother of former Flying Fijians centre Ropate Ratu and there were reports he had earlier turned down an offer to play the French 7s side as he hoped to don the white jumper one day.
“I am confident they will progress through the quarter-finals and only God will guide them further. We want to wish them all best as they prepare to take on Portugal.”
Fiji takes on Portugal at 7am on Monday.
