A TOTAL of 848 households, benefiting about 4240 people, were connected to Fiji’s electricity grid through 59 rural electrification projects completed in the 2025-2026 financial year.
Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau told Parliament on Wednesday that the projects were delivered in partnership with Energy Fiji Ltd at a total Government investment of $9.8million.
He said access to electricity provided improved opportunities for families, particularly children and businesses in rural communities.
“For many families, an electricity connection represents much more than a physical connection to the grid,” Ro Filipe said.
“It means children can study at night. It means health services can improve. It means businesses can operate longer.”
Ro Filipe also highlighted the installation of 900 solar home systems in rural, remote and maritime communities during the 2024-2025 financial year.
The initiative, backed by about $3.6million in Government funding, provided electricity access to approximately 4500 people.
He said households could now access electric lighting, charge mobile phones, watch television, operate washing machines and power appliances of up to 350 watts.
“These improvements are transforming the daily lives of people living in some of our most isolated communities.”
