There is a need for a total review of Fiji’s education curriculum, says Fiji Head Teachers Association president Johnson Rura.
He described Fiji’s curriculum as “too congested”.
“This is one of the major factors, there needs to be review and realignment of it,” he said.
Mr Rura also said the criteria for progression of children should include non-examinable subjects and other school related activities, which should start from Year 1 onwards.
Meanwhile, School Management Association of Fiji president Govind Singh also called for a review of the education curriculum, which he said was long overdue.
He said any review must be inclusive of the review of technical and vocational education.
“The revision of Fiji’s primary and secondary education curriculum needs to include a stronger focus on technical vocational education from Year Seven,” he said.
“This visionary approach will assist in providing students with better broader opportunities to explore career pathways aligned to their interest, skills and aptitude and Fiji’s national development needs.”
He said a well thought-out and designed curriculum, implemented with properly trained quality teachers and backed up by necessary resources, had the power to transform Fiji’s manpower needs.
