ANOTHER chapter of rugby league history will be unveiled today in Nadroga as two women’s teams will battle head on in a 9s tournament.

Fiji National Rugby League Nadroga Navosa development officer Suliasi Cakautabu said the match between Bemana and Coastal Roos would be the country’s first women rugby league match.

He said the idea was to involve women in the development of the sport as women had been actively involved in soccer and rugby union.

“This is a history not only for Nadroga but for the country as a whole,” he said.

“We have seen the involvement of women in rugby and soccer and we are glad that these women have stepped forward to promote and spread the gospel of rugby league in Nadroga.

“The two teams will also use the game as a build up for the upcoming Navosa Women 9s tournament scheduled at the end of next month.

Cakautabu said the involvement of women to play rugby league could also inspire their male counterparts to take up the sport.

He also thanked the women from the two teams for worthy initiative.

Meanwhile, newcomer to this year’s FNRL competition Coastal Owls anticipate a good outing against new Top 8 team Coastline Roos in their friendly game this afternoon.

The Coastal Owls is made up of players from Mataqe, Yadua and Kulukulu.

“This is a new team and playing against the Roos will be a good build-up for the season.”

Cakautabu said the third game of the day would be between St Theresa under 17 against Valley Junior.

“The game will be a play-off as who to represent Nadroga for the Fiji Secondary School Rugby League competition.
