IN a first for Ba Rugby, the union will hold a round of club games in each of the highland tikina of Savatu and Magodro next month.
A hub of friendly and colourful activity, especially on a Saturday, Ba Market was the venue for last week’s draw for this season’s Ba Club Rugby Competition with a record 32 teams going into the hat.
These clubs all play their opening fixture today – 11 matches are being hosted at Vinod Patel Park and five at Ba Methodist School in Nailaga.
“We will play two rounds then take a short break for the Skipper Cup quarterfinals and the AGM,” BRU secretary Gaby Kautoga noted.
“Then, in rounds 3 and 4, we will take the club rugby up to the hills.”
Round 3 is being called the ‘Savatu Round’ with four matches held at Nadarivatu Secondary School, while round 4 will have four games in the Magodro highlands.
“Clubs from these two tikina in particular have shown great commitment by making the long journey to Vinod Patel Park each week, so it’s time we rewarded them by holding some games closer to their home.
“This is all part of our efforts to become more inclusive and to remove barriers that may exist to participation,” Kautoga said.
“And that’s the key word for us – ‘participation’. We want as many players as possible – girls, boys, men and women – to be able to enjoy their rugby in Ba, and it’s BRU’s duty to provide such opportunities.”
