THE FMF Rewa Women’s Rugby team may have suffered another defeat 51-30 against Khelvin Civil Engineering Lautoka Women’s in the Subrails Marama Cup Championship, but their round four encounter provided a much-needed boost as the side finally found its way onto the scoreboard at Churchill Park in Lautoka last Saturday.
Team manager Frances Qounadovu said the players gave their all throughout the contest and welcomed the opportunity to compete again after three scoreless matches against Naitasiri, Malolo and Kadavu.
“It was a fair game, we loved every minute of it, the girls gave their all,” Qounadovu said.
After three consecutive games without points, getting on the scoreboard was an important achievement for a Rewa side that has endured a difficult opening to the competition.
The manager credited the players for their determination and thanked God for giving the team strength and the opportunity to experience the game again.
However, the manager acknowledged that there is still considerable work ahead, particularly in fitness, communication and technical skills.
The Rewa Women’s team has also faced challenges beyond the playing field, including limited technical assistance and the need for greater support for the players’ overall well-being.
Despite those difficulties, the team continues to represent young women from Serua, Ovalau and Rewa, bringing together players from different walks of life.
Frances thanked the various clubs within the Rewa Rugby Union, as well as the families who continue to support the players.
As the competition enters its fourth week, she appealed to the public to rally behind women’s rugby.
“One concern highlighted was the small crowd at the Marama Cup match, so I am urging supporters and the public to attend women matches and encourage their women’s team.
“Whatever the result, the Rewa Women’s Team is still there and are still fighting for this season,” Frances said.
The focus now turns to continued improvement and building on the positives from Round Four and more work on the fundamentals.
The Rewa Women’s team remains hopeful of better results as the Marama Cup Championship continues.
They will face Suva Women for Round 5 at the HFC Bank Stadium next weekend.
