YESTERDAY marked a historic chapter for Kadavu rugby as the Skipper Cup made its first appearance on the island, with Round Three matches played at Namalata Central School.
The occasion gave the people of Kadavu the opportunity to witness Fiji’s premier provincial rugby competition on home soil, and the hosts made the most of the milestone by completing a clean sweep against Rewa.
The U20 side got the historic day underway with a determined 17-12 victory over Rewa.
It was followed by a dominant performance from the Kadavu Marama side, which produced the biggest win of the day with a commanding 48-0 result.
The senior grade then provided the day’s closest contest.
In a tense battle, Kadavu edged Rewa 18-17, holding on for a thrilling one-point victory to complete three wins from three matches.
While the results gave the home supporters plenty to celebrate, the significance of the day extended well beyond the scoreboard.
For the people of Kadavu, the arrival of the Skipper Cup represented an important milestone. Namalata Central School became the centre of provincial rugby, bringing together players, families, supporters and communities to witness a competition that is usually played outside the island.
For the first time, Kadavu’s rugby community did not have to travel elsewhere to experience the atmosphere of Skipper Cup rugby. The competition came to them.
And the home sides responded with performances that matched the occasion.
The U20 side showed resilience to secure its five-point victory, the Marama side delivered a dominant shutout, while the senior team kept its composure in a one-point thriller.
The three results also provided a fitting reward for the supporters who turned out to witness the historic occasion.
Round Three will therefore stand out in the Skipper Cup calendar for Kadavu, not only because of the results but because of what the day represented.
