Tears of joy spilled at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori on Sunday after the final whistle was blown by referee Altaf Buksh in the final round of the Digicel Premier League between Rewa and Lautoka.
The Delta Tigers created history this season by winning its first National League title since its inception in 1977.
Captain Setariki Hughes was the hero for the side after netting the winner in the last minute of the match.
The title race was between Rewa, Lautoka and Suva. The Capital City side took the lead against Nadroga and the league title was on its way, but it was Hughes who kicked a left foot drive from the right hand side which caught Lautoka goalkeeper flat-footed.
The celebrations started for the Delta Tigers. Hughes dedicated his goal to his daughter Mere. “My preparation for this goal was not only today (Sunday),” he said.
“I have been praying and working hard during training for this goal for my eldest daughter because after losing the final against Labasa in the Punjas BOG, my wife told me that Mere cried after knowing we lost in the final. It inspired me to more work harder.
“I dedicate my goal to my daughter and the DPL title to all the hardworking Rewa players, officials and fans.”
The national rep was very proud to score the winning goal. “The hero is up there and I am here representing Him with my teammates and I thank Him for His guidance and the blessing of the Man above who is my pillar of strength.
“It’s a proud moment for me, my family and all the Rewa players, officials and fans as we create history for winning the league title for the first time.”
Hughes said Rewa meant a lot for him.
“This is my family and Rewa means a lot to me.
“I am going to stick with Rewa though my dream was fulfilled to help the team win our first ever league title.
“Today’s (Sunday) happiness is the addition to my diary and will always cherish the first national league title with Rewa FC.”
Rewa ended its campaign with 35 points, equal with second placed finishers Suva, but with a better goal difference of +12, compared to the Whites’ +11.
The Marika Rodu-coached side registered nine wins, 8 draws and a loss in the league.
