REWA’S young footballers made a strong statement at the McDonald’s Southern Zone league yesterday, with big wins across multiple age groups at the Fiji Football Academy grounds in Vatuwaqa.

The under-14 boys thrashed Navua 8-0, while the U10 boys also defeated Navua 8-0 and drew 1-1 with Suva.

The U14 girls showed their strength with two wins, 1-0 against Suva and 1-0 against Navua. The only loss came in the U12 boys match, where Suva edged Rewa 2-1.

Head coach Rodeck Singh, who oversees all Rewa age groups, said the McDonald’s league is a vital platform for development.

“This is the golden age. It’s very important to keep a tab on how these boys are doing,” Singh said.

He believes the tournament plays a key role in identifying future Rewa reps and Bula Boys.

“I think the boys are performing well. They’re learning the structure of football, not just playing for fun, but understanding what the game requires. Some are only 12 or 13, but they’re already showing maturity.”

Singh also shared the main message he gives his players.

“Talent alone is not enough. You must put in the effort. Effort is always more important than talent,” he said.

He thanked the Fiji Football Association and the organisers, for creating such opportunities for the youth.

“This McDonald’s league is s a great platform, and we’re very fortunate to be part of it,” Singh added.

Suva’s U12 boys had a strong showing as well, defeating Rewa 2-1 and Navua 4-0, while the U14 girls from Navua held Suva to a 0-0 draw.

Coach Singh says Rewa has long-term goals and will continue to build on the progress made at this tournament as the year goes on.
