Retail shop in Cicia closed over health concerns

A retail shop operating in Cicia has been issued with a closure order by Health Inspectors after failing to comply with a three-month abatement notice to address insanitary conditions.

In a statement, the Fiji Ministry of Health and Medical Services said inspectors found the premises had not carried out the required improvements despite being given prior notice.

Health officials also identified structural defects within the building, raising occupational health and safety concerns and the potential risk of food contamination.

The Ministry said the conditions at the premises posed concerns for both public health and workplace safety standards.

“The retail shop owners have been given time to improve the insanitary conditions before reinspection and reopening,” the statement said.

The Ministry has not disclosed how long the closure order will remain in place but confirmed the shop would only be allowed to reopen once all identified issues had been addressed and the premises passed reinspection requirements.
