OPPOSITION MP Ketan Lal has raised concern over the peaceful protest held by traditional leaders of the Bose Vanua of Rakiraki calling for the dissolution of the 2013 Constitution.

Mr Lal said calling for the abrogation of the 2013 Constitution was a dangerous signal to the rule of law.

“It is shocking that such a march – calling for the removal/abrogation of our Constitution – was allowed to proceed with permits from both the Fiji Police Force and the Fiji Roads Authority,” said Mr Lal in a social media post.

“The 2013 Constitution is the supreme law of the land. It has been the foundation of stability, equal citizenry and the democratic processes that elected all of us, including this government.

“Calls for its abrogation are not just undemocratic; they border on sedition.”

He said these calls risked reopening wounds of the past which many were still healing from.

“Fiji has come a long way.

“Our Constitution, though not perfect as claimed by a handful, guarantees equal citizenry, independent institutions and a platform for peaceful progress.

“It gives voice and rights to all Fijians. Not just a select few.

“Our country has seen too much division in the past – division based on race, religion, province, and power.

“Those dark chapters in our history must never be repeated.”

Mr Lal added Fiji needs harmony and not hostility.

“We need dialogue, not demands.

“We need unity, not upheaval.”
