RESIDENTS and stakeholders in the greater Suva area will have an opportunity to have their say on a major proposed upgrade of the Kinoya Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) is inviting communities, businesses, organisations and other interested stakeholders to attend an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) public consultation meeting on the proposed works.
The project, being undertaken under the Healthy Oceans and Water Security Improvement Project (HOWSIP), is jointly funded by the Asian Development Bank and the Fiji Government.
WAF, in a statement said the upgrade was aimed at improving the reliability, capacity and performance of the treatment plant, which serves Suva, Nasinu, Nakasi and Davuilevu.
The proposed works include improvements to wastewater treatment processes, sludge management facilities, disinfection systems, operational infrastructure and environmental controls.
An EIA was currently being developed and, once completed, will be submitted to the Department of Environment for review and approval. WAF said the consultation would allow members of the public to learn about the project and key findings of the draft EIA, while raising concerns and providing local knowledge.
The authority said people would also be able to provide feedback on potential environmental and social impacts and proposed mitigation measures.
“WAF encourages all members of the community to participate and contribute towards a sustainable, inclusive, and environmentally responsible project for the benefit of present and future generations,” the authority said.
The consultation will be held at Kinoya Village hall on Wednesday, September 9, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. WAF urged all interested members of the community and stakeholders to attend and contribute to the project.
