Fiji Labour Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry has called on the Prime Minister to act swiftly and decisively on the findings of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of FICAC.

“If the Prime Minister is sincere in wanting to cleanse his government of all the rot and the self-serving elements that have brought it into disrepute, he must release the Commission of Inquiry Report and act on its key recommendations,” Mr Chaudhry said.

The commission was established following public outrage over Ms Malimali’s appointment.

The 400-page COI report was handed to the President, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, and the Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, two weeks ago.

While the Prime Minister has cited the need for legal advice due to the report’s complexity, Mr Chaudhry says the public has waited long enough.

“Two weeks is ample time to unravel the legalese. The Prime Minister needs to tell the expectant nation what exactly is happening,” he said.

With public trust in FICAC at stake, Mr Chaudhry insists that Ms Malimali must go.

“Her credibility is in tatters. She must be removed to restore confidence in FICAC,” he said.
