Records fall

FOUR records fell in the second day of the 2017 Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Finals at the ANZ Stadium in Laucala Bay, Suva.

And the organisers anticipate more records to tumble in the final day of competition.

Fiji Secondary Schools association general secretary Vuli Waqa said with the records broken in the first two days, they expected more to come in the final day.

“The two past days has been good,” waq said.

“I am happy with the turnout and with the records broken in the two days it shows how tough the competition is from all schools.

“The big schools are threatened by the smaller schools.

“So expect more records to be crushed in the field events,” Waqa said.

Among the highlights of yesterday’s competition was the sub junior shot put record holder Jesse Stolz, who set a record of 14.17 metres breaking the old record held by Koliniasi Balesomosomo of Queen Victoria School in 2014.

In the senior boys javelin Niusawa Methodist High School’s Amania Veisa set a record of 56.59 metres breaking the old record of 54.45 metres set by Pita Tamani of MBHS.

The junior boys shot put record was set by Sekonaia Bulu of MBHS with a throw of 17.02 metres breaking the old record of 16.56 metres by Sailosi Falewai of QVS.

In the junior boys long jump Natabua High School’s Josevata Rasoi set a record of 5.81 metres taking over the old record of fellow NHS athlete Josefa Matau of 5.47 metres in 2014.

The mighty Adi Cakobau School team leads the girls medal tally at the end of day two while defending champion Jasper Williams High School is in second place and Saint Joseph’s Secondary School is in third spot.
