Ratu Tu’uakitau finally at rest

Fijian chief and former politician, Ratu George Cokanauto Tu’uakitau was finally laid to rest at the old Suva Cemetery today.

Hundreds of mourners gathered this morning for the funeral service at the Wesley Church in Suva to pay their final respects and farewell a life that was recognized not only for his noble linage but also for his wisdom, compassion and vision for a united and prosperous Fiji.

Tears flowed as eulogies were delivered about Ratu Cokanauto’s life – as he is commonly known, which was marked by his extraordinary leadership and selfless service to Fiji.

While delivering an eulogy on behalf of the family, Ratu Penaia Kadavulevu, Ratu Cokanauto’s eldest child, said his Ratu was more than just a father.

“He was a loving, devoted and exceptional man,” Ratu Penaia said.

“We are grateful for the time we had with him and as we say our final goodbye, let us remember the love, laughter and wisdom he shared with us,” he said.

Ratu Cokanauto was the son of the late former deputy prime minister Ratu Sir Edward Tuivanuavou Tungi Cakobau and the late Adi Lady Vasemaca Tuiburelevu.

He is survived by his dear wife Taraivosa Lagilagi, and his children Ratu Penaia, Ratu Jone Savou, Ratu Edward Tavanavanua, and Adi Litia Tuiburelevu.

Among the mourners in attendance today were the crown Prince and Princess of Tonga, the Marama Roko Tui Dreketi, Ro Teimumu Kepa, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, Adi Koila Nailatikau, Roko Tui Bau, Ratu Timoci Tavanavanua, Deputy Prime Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, Adi Finau Tabakaucoro, Graham Leung and Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara.

Ratu Cokanauto died peacefully on Wednesday, September 13 at the Oceania Private Hospital in Suva after a short illness.

He was 78-years-old.
