HEAVYWEIGHT boxer Sainivalati “The Warrior” Ratu is set to face his greatest challenge yet, taking on Samoa’s most promising heavyweight prospect, Jolando Lala Ta’ala, who trains under the guidance of Samoan boxing legend David Tua.
The bout forms part of the 64th Independence Day celebrations and is billed as the “Pacific Ring of Fire” event, scheduled for Friday, June 5.
Fresh from his recent upset victory over former Fiji heavyweight champion James Singh, Ratu and his team are already in Samoa, preparing for his next big fight.
At the recent 2026 Pacific Nations Championships, Ta’ala won gold and was named the tournament’s Best Male Boxer, with Tua working closely in his corner.
Standing at 6’1″ (185cm), Ta’ala previously represented American Samoa in both the light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions, securing a silver medal at the 2019 Pacific Games.
Under Tua’s guidance through Independent Boxing Samoa, Ta’ala has split his training between the US (Las Vegas), American Samoa and Samoa.
For Ratu, who boasts an impressive amateur record of 53 fights with seven losses, alongside a professional record of one win and one loss, the opportunity to face a world-class opponent was one he could not refuse.
“It means everything to me – as a boxer, to be the best you must fight the best,” he said.
Just a few months ago, Ratu witnessed Ta’ala dispatch all his opponents at the Pacific Nations Championships in Suva by knockout.
Far from feeling intimidated, “The Warrior” is eager to share the ring and test himself against such a skilled and talented adversary.
“I really want to build on this experience and definitely secure a win,” he said confidently.
“To represent my country and my club is an honour, and I can feel the weight of expectations on my shoulders.”
Meanwhile, Eliseo Cakaunivalu, also from Team Brave Boxing Club, along with Fiji Amateur Boxing Association boxers Aminiasi Saratiba, Jone Davule and Elijiah Qiokata, will also be participating in the tournament.
