An official of the Reproductive and Family Health Association of Fiji (RFHAF) has made a compelling appeal for a seafaring future anchored in safety, dignity, and sexual and reproductive rights.

RFHAF program manager Sera Ratu told World Seafarers Day 2025 celebrations in Suva on Wednesday the maritime industry’s vision of a harassment-free ship should include robust access to sexual and reproductive health services, not only for women but also for men.

“The crucial aspect of harassment free ship is ensuring the protection and promotion of sexual and reproductive rights, reproductive health and rights,” Ms Ratu said.

“Seafarers, not only women but also men, have unique challenges in accessing services, including information, counselling on HIV and also sexually transmitted infections.”

She reminded seafarers that due to the mobile and isolated nature of their work, they were at an increased risk and should not be left behind when it comes to healthcare access.

“The lack of access to these services can have a significant implication for their health and well-being.

“Harassment and discrimination can aggravate these challenges, making it difficult for seafarers to seek help or report incidents. This is not just a moral imperative, it is essential for the long-term sustainability and success of the industry.

“Let us commit to taking concrete actions to prevent harassment, bullying and discrimination and to ensure that all seafarers have access to services that they need.”
