Rakiraki FC secured a thrilling 8-7 victory over Dreketi FC in the Senior Division final of the FMF Inter-District Championship (IDC) at Churchill Park, Lautoka, yesterday.
The match remained goalless after full time and 30 minutes extra time, leading to a decisive penalty shootout.
All 11 players from both teams had their chance in the first round of penalties. In the second round, Rakiraki’s sweeper, Krishneel Raju, made a crucial save, denying Dreketi’s final kick from Shivnesh Sami and sealing the win for his team.
Raju, who stepped in as goalkeeper, was the hero of the day.
Reflecting on the moment, Raju said, “It’s a proud moment for the boys of Rakiraki. I used to be a keeper, and I thank the boys for trusting me to be in goal. I was confident,” Raju said.
“We last won in 2016, and we’re happy to win it again in 2024.”
Rakiraki earned $3,500 in prize money, along with a trophy and medals, while Dreketi settled for $1,500.
