A Rakiraki school linked to the early education of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna will host the soft launch of the 2026 Ratu Sukuna Day celebrations this week, as the nation prepares to honour one of Fiji’s most influential leaders.
Wairuku Primary School in Rakiraki, Ra, will host the official launch on Thursday, 28 May, along with the opening of the Ratu Sukuna Library.
The venue carries historical significance, with school records showing that Reverend Andrew’s first pupils in 1898 included “Ratu J.L.V Sukuna”, who later became Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna.
The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs said the celebrations would honour the life, leadership and legacy of Ratu Sukuna, whose contributions to the iTaukei people and Fiji continue to inspire generations.
The opening of the library is also being recognised as a tribute to Ratu Sukuna’s belief in education as the foundation for leadership, service and national development.
The main Ratu Sukuna Day celebration will be held in Lautoka on Friday, 29 May, where Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka will officiate as chief guest.
Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu said the celebrations were an opportunity for Fijians to reflect on the values Ratu Sukuna stood for.
“Ratu Sukuna’s legacy continues to speak to us today. His vision was not only for the advancement of the iTaukei people, but for a stronger and more united Fiji,” Vasu said.
“This year’s celebrations remind us to continue building on that vision through education, service and responsible leadership.”
The Ministry has encouraged schools, communities, civil society groups and the public to participate in the celebrations in Ra and Lautoka.
