The police badge and uniform does not give officers the right to use senseless violence on ordinary citizens, says Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission director Ashwin Raj.

Mr Raj was commenting on a video that is being widely shared on social media showing a police officer physically assaulting a bus driver in Labasa on Monday.

Mr Raj said the commission strongly condemned the reprehensible act of gratuitous violence captured on the video.

He said he had written to the Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho urging the internal affairs to investigate the matter and ensure that the officer involved faces the full brunt of the law.

“The commission also commends members of the public who witnessed this ordeal for speaking out and condemning this act of violence,” he said. Mr Raj said the commission would commence its own investigations into the matter.
