The Raiwaqa Flyers touch rugby team is preparing for a historic journey as they gear up to compete in Queensland’s largest touch rugby tournament next week.
This marks the first time that a Fijian club has been invited to participate in this prestigious Brisbane event.
The team will be facing off against over 40 teams from Australia, making it a valuable experience for the young players.
The squad, made up of individuals aged 16 to 20, will be embarking on their first international campaign.
This achievement was celebrated during a farewell lunch held at St. Pius Catholic Church in Raiwaqa yesterday.
Jalesi Young, president of Touch Federation Fiji, expressed his excitement about this momentous occasion, stating that it has always been a goal to bring a Fijian club to international competition.
He adds this is a significant milestone for the youths of Raiwaqa to showcase their talents on an international level.
“So far, the preparations have been good, and the team is currently looking forward,” said Young.
“Most of these young ones will be their first time travelling, and quiet a few of them have represented Fiji in the Asia Pacific Junior competition.
“Touch community our aim is to give a positive impact to the lives of youths in the community, and through the sport of touch rugby, we create a holistic development program in the sport of touch and also providing empowerment and pathways to build them (youths) to become a better person in life.”
“Raiwaqa is working to engage the current generation in various sports, including touch rugby, to broaden their horizons and provide them with new opportunities.
The Raiwaqa Flyers stand as one of the oldest clubs, and they are thankful for all the accomplishments they have achieved.
The team will depart tomorrow, with competition to be held on November 28-30.
