ETUATE Raikoso’s match-winning try has strengthened his determination to earn a place in the Fiji Army team for the Defence Forces Rugby League World Cup in Australia.
The Army Bears winger produced the decisive moment in their Vodafone Cup quarter-final against Vusu Roaders, scoring in extra time to secure a 20-16 victory after the teams were locked 16-16 at fulltime.
For the Naitasiri native, the performance has provided timely motivation as he chases his first opportunity to represent Fiji Army at the international competition.
“I have never been part of the Army team for the competition, but I believe I can make the squad this year,” Raikoso said.
Raikoso said he had not expected to score the winning try but capitalised when he spotted an opening in the Vusu defence.
“I looked up and saw the defence was napping. I took the opportunity and scored the try,” he said.
Army Bears and Navy Albatross have been central to the military’s preparations, with their Vodafone Cup campaigns providing valuable match exposure.
Head coach Sefanaia Koroi said the Army had enjoyed a strong campaign and was looking forward to defending its title.
Fiji Army won the 2017 competition in Australia, defeating Australia 44-12 in the final.
The Army Bears women, Army Bears men and Navy Albatross all advanced to their respective semi-finals this weekend, giving the military sides further preparation ahead of the World Cup.
