SCHOOL management committees wanting to insure their infrastructure from fires or natural disasters could discuss their options with the Ministry of Education.
Responding to questions from the Opposition if schools could be protected from these disasters, Education Minister Aseri Radrodro said discussions could be done with the ministry’s Disaster Risk Resilient Department.
“We’ve set up a Disaster Risk Resilient Department in the Ministry of Education to look at any disaster confronting schools at the various districts and divisions. In terms of the utilisation of the Free Education Grant (FEG),” said Mr Radrodro.
“The responsibility is with the management of the schools, and we have encouraged the schools if they have not utilised the Free Education Grant, they can write to us so that we can collaborate and discuss on the better utilisation of those unused FEG.”
He said the issue of using the unused FEG to insure the schools could also be discussed.
“The school’s authority is with the management of the school or the faith-based organisation. We provide the Free Education Grant based on six allocations and they can discuss it with us should they wish to explore those opportunities.”
