EDUCATION Minister Aseri Radrodro says plans to introduce Chinese language courses in Fiji schools have been “taken out of context”, saying the subject is only optional.

The clarification comes amid strong online backlash over the proposal, with Mr Radrodro saying Chinese is being considered as an option for students as the ministry looks to prepare them for further study and professional opportunities overseas.

“It is taken out of context,” he said.

“It is not mandatory, but an option that can be provided to students is to undertake these language courses.”

Mr Radrodro said the ministry was also considering other languages that could benefit students as they explore opportunities abroad, including French, which is already offered through some private organisations.

He said existing language arrangements including Fijian languages and Hindi were also under review following concerns raised about how language learning should be incorporated into schools.

He said the focus was on giving students more opportunities and ensuring they were prepared for overseas education and professional engagement.

“We are also trying to see how best we can introduce other languages in schools.”
