Rabuka calls for patience

Listen to this article:

PRIME Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged Fijians to be fair in their expectations of Government, saying the country must move forward with integrity, not haste.

Responding to a reader’s question published in The Fiji Times column A Conversation with the PM, Mr Rabuka acknowledged the growing public demand for transparency but stressed the importance of
rebuilding democratic institutions carefully, especially after years of restricted civic space.

“Let us continue to hold our leaders accountable,” he said.

“But let us also be fair in our expectations and not forget the long shadow cast by the past.

“We owe it to our democracy to move forward with integrity, not haste.”

His comments come as the Government faces pressure to speed up reforms and deliver on promises of open governance.

Mr Rabuka said restoring trust and strengthening institutions needed to be steady and deliberate, not rushed.

“We understand the people’s desire for answers and change,” he said. “But real, lasting progress demands method and patience.”

The reader’s letter asked how the Prime Minister balances calls for transparency with the need for careful rebuilding after years of suppressed civic freedoms.

The Prime Minister said accountability is essential, but so is remembering the context from which Fiji is emerging.
