A TOTAL of 539 traditional titles has been filled in the province of Ra, representing about 81 per cent, says iTaukei Affairs Minister Ifereimi Vasu.
Speaking at the Ra Provincial Council meeting in Nanukuloa, Rakiraki last week Mr Vasu emphasised the importance of filling these traditional titles.
“Strong and recognised traditional leadership is essential for unity, decision-making, land development and the effective implementation of village and provincial programs,” he said.
“I urge the remaining communities to complete the required processes through consultation, respect for custom and cooperation with the Commission.”
Mr Vasu said the iTaukei Trust Fund Board continues to support the preservation of language and culture, education, research, institutional capacity and community initiatives.
“Fijian Holdings Ltd also continues to strengthen indigenous participation in major sectors of the national economy and to build commercial assets for future generations.
“The Centre for Appropriate Technology and Development at Nadave is equipping young iTaukei with practical and technical skills so they can enter employment, establish enterprises and contribute productively to their communities.
“The iTaukei Lands and Fisheries Commission is also carrying out the vital work of resolving and recording traditional leadership.”
He said these institutions could provide pathways, finance, technical advice and protection.
“But success will still depend on the discipline and unity of our people.
” The vanua o Ra must bring forward serious projects, establish proper governance structures, protect communal assets and ensure that benefits reach present and future generations.
“The purpose is not simply to receive grants or lease money. The purpose is to convert land, knowledge, culture and institutional support into lasting household and community prosperity.”
