Queen Victoria School (QVS) have earned the opportunity to rewrite their story after securing a hard-fought victory over Lelean Memorial School to book their place in the Eastern Zone Under-14 final.
The semi-final was a tense and physical affair, with QVS holding their composure under pressure to seal a place in next weekend’s championship decider against long-time rivals Ratu Kadavulevu School (RKS).
For QVS U14 head coach Luke Rairai, the result was built on determination, faith and a defensive effort that refused to buckle against a larger Lelean outfit.
“First and foremost, I thank God for giving the boys the strength and providing for them throughout the game,” Rairai said.
“It was a very nerve-wracking match. I want to thank the boys for their commitment in defence. They stood up well despite Lelean being the bigger side physically.”
While celebrating the victory, Rairai was quick to point out that the job is far from finished.
“We still need to improve our defence and continue working together as a team. We’ll go back, work on those areas and prepare well for the final.”
The win now sets up one of the most anticipated clashes of the Eastern Zone competition, with QVS taking on an RKS side that has already beaten them twice this season.
Those previous defeats have only added another layer of intrigue to the final, as QVS heads into the contest with the opportunity to overturn the script when it matters most.
“We’ve met RKS twice this season and they’ve beaten us both times,” Rairai admitted.
“We’ll go into the final as underdogs, but we’ll do everything we can to turn the tables next week.”
Despite the odds, confidence remains high within the QVS camp. The coaching staff believes the team has grown with every outing this season, learning valuable lessons from both victories and defeats.
The players will also draw confidence from their resilience in the semi-final, where discipline and defensive grit proved decisive.
Rather than being weighed down by those earlier losses, Rairai believes they have provided valuable lessons for his young side heading into the biggest match of their campaign.
He says the focus throughout the week will be on sharpening the team’s combinations, improving communication and ensuring every player is mentally prepared for the challenge that awaits.
With Eastern Zone supremacy on the line, QVS now has one final chance to prove that previous results count for little once the whistle blows.
After surviving a gritty semi-final, the boys from Matavatucou will be looking to produce their best performance of the season and deny RKS a third straight victory, while completing a remarkable turnaround when the title is on the line.
