OPPOSITION MP Vijay Nath has questioned the Government’s response to those affected by Tropical Cyclone Rae.
Speaking on behalf of the Opposition, Mr Nath said while initial assessments indicated Vanua Levu did not experience severe damage, the heavy rainfall had caused flooding.
“Agricultural authorities are currently evaluating the extent of damage to farms,” he said.
“The Fiji Roads Authority is conducting bridge inspections, road repairs, and ongoing drainage work in affected areas.
“However, it is surprising that the Hon Minister has chosen to visit the Waiqele Airport upgrade instead of prioritising disaster response.”
He questioned why authorities had not yet made their way to Lau.
“We must ask whether essential relief items, such as food rations and tents, have been delivered to the affected areas.
“The people of Fiji deserve a well-coordinated and timely disaster response, and it is the government’s responsibility to ensure immediate relief and recovery efforts.
“This is the Coalition Government’s first major test, and their response has been mixed.
“While they have been actively involved in issuing warnings and coordinating recovery efforts, there are valid concerns about the efficiency and speed of their response.”
He said many affected communities still awaited adequate support, and the Opposition stood in solidarity with the people of Fiji during this difficult time.
“We will continue to hold the government accountable to ensure that relief efforts are effectively managed and that no affected community is left behind.”
